about

Despite changes in line up during their early days, the band has always centred around the creative nucleus of Dan Barry, (c. August 1979: Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica.) and Mark Thompson, (c. August 1979: Vocals, Guitar.) until settling in June 1999 with other roles being filled by Paul Fallon, (c. 1977: Drums.) and finally Chris McReynolds, (c. January 1976: Bass, Backing vocals.)

Whilst not closing themselves off to any influence, TARNISH have been difficult to pigeonhole under any sound. Fans have however likened them to be a cross between 'Soul Asylum meets Faith No More' and also names such as Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Led Zeppelin (the band who inspired their previous name Communication Breakdown.) have been dropped into conversation when trying to sell their sound and tickets to friends and interested parties.

Starting off with smaller gigs in small venues in their hometown of Redcar, at the local college where they met. Local pubs and clubs such as local legendary folk club, The Top House, Marske, and explosive sets at The Spa Hotel, Saltburn. The band soon started moving further a field, performing twice at Huddersfield University, once at the Student Union Bar, and again for a Battle Of The Bands. Some of the high points for TARNISH so far have been performances at one of Middlesborough’s most revered rock clubs, Blaises. Edu.Co, sponsored performances including the European launch of the electric car during which they made a new friend by the name of Mo Molam. TARNISH also performed at the Cornerhouse in Middlesbrough alongside many other bands during the revered Cornocopia events and played at The Dickens Inn along with the Intrepid Explorer.

Even TARNISH'S review at their first gig was supportive, the band were described as having 'Strong vocals and confident guitars.' Rob Nichols a reviewer for the Evening Gazette wrote ‘TARNISH hail from Redcar and have an extremely accomplished air about them. They have lots of bounce and energy in their sound and a very engaging front man. ”You scare me like complacency” was a line that leapt out at me. There’s nothing complacent about this band, who really plug into their audience and go out to entertain. I’d like to see Tarnish again.
